Lia Forti obtained a Physics Degree from the University of Milano (1987) and a Biophysics PhD at SISSA-ISAS, Trieste (1992).

In the early part of her scientific career, working at the University of Padua, she worked on the biophysical properties of voltage-dependent calcium channels, describing novel subtypes of high-voltage activated channels in cerebellar cultured neurons (Forti & Pietrobon,1993, Neuron, 10:437; Forti et al.,1994, J Neuroscience, 14: 5243).

In her first post-doctoral years she studied the physiology of central nervous system (CNS) synapses working at the S.Raffaele Scientific Institute (Milano). She developed a procedure for measuring synaptic currents in isolation from an individual CNS bouton in cultured hippocampal neurons, which was crucial for clarifying quantal properties at a single synaptic site (Forti et al., 1997, Nature, 388:874; Abenavoli et al., 2002. J Neuroscience, 22:6336).

She was later involved for many years in cerebellar physiology, studying the excitability and synaptic properties of cerebellar interneurons with patch-clamp and Ca2+ imaging techniques in acute cerebellar slices. She focused mainly on molecular layer interneurons and Golgi cells, working at the MPI fur biophysikalische Chemie (Göttingen), at the University of Pavia, and at the Institut de Neurobiologie of the École Normale Supérieure, Paris (Forti et al., 2000, J Physiology, 527:33;  Gall et al., 2005, J Neuroscience, 25:4813; Magistretti et al., 2006, J Physiology, 573:83; Forti et al., 2006, J Physiology, 574:711; Solinas et al., 2007, Front Cell Neurosci, 1:2. doi:10.3389/neuro.03.002.2007; Solinas et al., 2007, Front Cell Neurosci, 1:4. doi:10.3389/neuro.03.004.2007; Cesana et al., 2013, J Neuroscience 33:12430).

In the years 2014-2017 she collaborated with research laboratories at the S.Raffaele Scientific Institute and at the Univ. of Insubria (Mazzocchi et al., 2016, J Biomol Screen, 21:372;  La Montanara et al., 2015, J Biol Chem, 290:4512; De Ceglia et al., 2014, Brain Behav Immun, 45:263).

In recent years (2017-present) she was involved in a national research network studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of acute stress responses in the rat prefrontal cortex and the mechanisms of resilience/vulnerability to development of psychiatric disorders  (Forti et al., 2023, Int J Mol Sci, DOI: 10.3390/ijms24108718; Sala et al., 2022, Front. Pharmacol., DOI: 10.3389/fphar.2022.759626).

Since the year 2000, Lia Forti teached in the Lab. Of Membrane Biophysics (Physics Course, Univ. degli Studi di Milano, 2000-2003), Lab. Of Applied Physics (Biological and Biomedical Sciences Course, Univ. of Insubria, 2003-2012), Physics (Biological Sciences Course, Univ. of Insubria, 2012-present).

She is currently (since 2020) the Director of the Center for Neuroscience Research of the University of Insubria (https://www.uninsubria.it/siti-tematici-o-federati/centri-di-ricerca/cen...)
