CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The course aims to provide basic knowledge related to methods and technologies to promote the circular economy at a global level, incorporating the following concepts: "prevent waste if possible", "create value from waste if waste is unavoidable" and “recover value from end-of-life products.” Based on the “Sustainable development goals”, the targets and indicators are described to promote actions towards an environmental, social, and economic sustainability together with the environmental communication, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). At the end of the course the student will be able to: • Understand the need for preparation and knowledge on Environmental Communication and Education and Sustainable Development • Recognize Circular Economy (CE) actions • Recognize actions linked to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) • Identify contexts in which EC can be introduced and the relative advantages and disadvantages. • Know the “life cycle thinking (LCT)” approaches, the analysis of the environmental (LCA: LCI&LCIA), social (sLCA &sLCC) and cost (eLCA) life cycle, to promote the sustainable use of resources and support the EC. Know and understand environmental footprints and their application. • Know and understand technologies to prevent waste, create value from waste and recover value from end-of-life products. • Know and understand the tools introduced by the European Commission: Circular Economy, Sustainable Development Goals, FIT for 55, ESPR and their application. • Know and understand the connection between Climate Change and EC • Demonstrate conscious autonomy of judgment with reference to the evaluation of CE initiatives and their impact on the environment. Expected learning results. The achieved expertise will allow the collaboration in activities oriented to the inclusion and development of actions of circular economy and related topics, in public and private contexts.
