Understand the historical, cultural, legal and economic role of the Mediterranean, with a particular focus on the role of the religious traditions present in it (Judaism, Christianity and Islam), their political projections and the economic role currently played by this geopolitical space.

The first module of the course, to which this first part of the syllabus refers (for the second part see Prof. F. Cortellezzi's syllabus) will be divided into three main parts. Initially, a general framework on the 'Mediterranean' will be provided, on the cultural, historical and geopolitical meaning of this sea; then the historical relations between its two shores (North and South) will be analysed, with particular attention to the colonial legacy. Finally, we will focus on some specific cases: Tunisia, Egypt, Israel and the issue of human rights in Islam in order to explore some of the most debated issues in the region today.

The course will include both lectures based on the flipped classrooms method and seminar lectures with international guests. Active participation will be encouraged.

The lecturer receives students on Mondays from 3 to 4.30 p.m. in the Manica Lunga room. You can always write to alessandro.ferrari@uninsubria.it
