The exam is oral. Registration via electronic noticeboard is mandatory and must respect deadlines. Failure to cancel before the deadline after registering results in losing one exam session.
At the end of the course, students will understand the fundamental aspects of global tourism as a key geographical phenomenon, focusing on its historical evolution, tourism types, socio-economic and environmental impacts in different geographic areas, and the untapped or consumed tourism potential of cultural and natural landscapes.
The course consists of two modules. The first module covers foundational aspects and studies territory as a complex cultural product, analyzing four levels of tourist image: global image, cultural image, perceived image, and imaginary. The second module investigates the effects of communication on the tourist image using visual, semantic, and Sentiment Analysis tools. Students may conduct visual or semantic surveys to examine how images of a tourist destination are conveyed, perceived, and offered, critically analyzing any discrepancies.
• Fundamentals of tourism geography: definitions, historical evolution, key concepts. • Territory as a cultural product: analysis of tourist images (global, cultural, perceived, imaginary). • Introduction to visual, semantic, and Sentiment Analysis techniques. • Critical analysis of web-conveyed tourist images: methodologies and case studies. • Socio-economic and environmental impacts of tourism in different geographic areas. • Tourism potential of cultural and natural landscapes. • Practical applications through visual or semantic surveys. Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth (Promoting sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture). • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities (Strengthening efforts to protect cultural and natural heritage). • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production (Encouraging sustainable tourism practices). • SDG 13: Climate Action (Addressing the environmental impact of tourism).
Lectures with strong active participation from students. Supplementary seminars conducted by experts and professionals. Multimedia laboratories if consistent with the seminar activities. Educational support through PowerPoint presentations, geographic and thematic maps, alternative communication media (magazines, films, websites)
