ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS - Environmental health engineering
No specific prior knowledge is required
The exam is divided in three parts corresponding to the three major topics of the respective modules. Specifically:
For the Environmental Sanitary Engineering module, it will be a written test, with multiple-choice questions.
Each module is worth up to 10 points. The evaluation will take into account the knowledge acquired, as well as the ability to elaborate, present, argue, and synthesize this knowledge
The course contributes to the professional development of the Environmental and Workplace Prevention Technician. Specifically, it provides the knowledge to (i) understand the physical dynamics involved in the interaction between human activities and the environment; (ii) identify solutions to reduce the environmental impact of these activities; (iii) understand the legal context.
The Course is divided into three modules: (i) the “Environmental Sanitary Engineering” module focuses on the impacts of waste and water, including wastewater management, and is taught by Professor Elena Rada; (ii) the “Environmental Impact of Energy Systems” module covers the environmental impact of technologies for energy use and transformation, and is taught by Professor Fabrizio Fattori; (iii) the “Environmental Assessments and Environmental Law” module addresses key topics in environmental law, including environmental assessment procedures and the "Seveso" directive, and is taught by Professor Stefano Fanetti.
Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of the Course, students will be able to:
Understand the concepts of EC and SDGs and their connection to ISA; understand the relationships between technologies for waste, water, and wastewater management and their impact.
Identify and analyze the relationships between energy transformation technologies and their environmental impact.
Understand some of the main environmental regulations, such as those concerning EIA and SEA.
For the module Environmental Sanitary Engineering, the course content is structured as follows:
2 hours
• Introduction to the topic of waste, water and wastewater
6 hours
• Notes on: Environmental Education & Sustainability + Sustainable Development + SDGs + FIT for 55 + Environmental Footprints, LCA, Climate Change, Black Carbon
12 hours
• Environmental impact of waste: collection, treatment and disposal.
• Water pollution phenomena and remediation techniques
• Environmental impact of wastewater: treatment, reuse, discharge into water bodies
• Notes on air quality management
• Environmental procedures
The module of Environmental and Sanitary Engineering is delivered during the first semester, for a total of 20 hours.
The course includes lectures that use presentations in which the concepts are described both verbally and graphically.
