Knowledge of the structure of microorganisms of clinical importance: structural features, virulence factors, , related diseases, principles of microbiological diagnostics. Transmission of microorganisms: interhuman, vertical, zoonoses, and foodborne toxins. Risk of infection in relation to "high risk infectious" behaviors and/or contexts and possibilities for prevention through the use of vaccination, antibiotic prophylaxis, and use of personal protective equipment. Biosafety levels in the laboratory.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of the course, the student should have acquired basic knowledge of microbiology and the main microorganisms responsible for human diseases, present in the environment, food and workplaces. this knowledge will be fundamental for understanding the in-depth courses planned in subsequent years.

Bacterial and fungal cell structure; principles of viral structure and replication.

Types of interaction between microorganism and host, distinction between infection and disease.Interaction between microorganisms and the immune systemMethods of disinfection and sterilization Sterile districts of the organism and composition of the microbiota.
Bacterial and viral replication
Principles of microbiological diagnostics (classical/molecular and indirect direct methods).
Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance. Vaccines.
Microorganisms and the environment: legionellosis, borreliosis, zoonoses, diseases due to ingestion of contaminated water/food, skin infections and care-related infections.
The major microorganisms of clinical interest: enterobacteria, staphylococci, streptococci, neisseriae, HIV, HBV, HCV (general aspects, pathogenicity factors, related diseases, transmissibility)
The unavoidable behavioral aspects aimed at infectious risk management. Examples.
