STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONS OF BIOMOLECULES

Degree course:
Corso di First cycle degree in Biomedical Laboratory techniques
Academic year when starting the degree:
2022/2023
Year:
1
Academic year in which the course will be held:
2022/2023
Credits:
4
Period:
First Semester
Standard lectures hours:
48
Requirements:

Students are required to have a basic knowledge of mathematics (in particular logarithms and functions). For the students who, despite having passed the admission test, reach a score lower than 6 in Chemistry questions, specific Additional Educational Obligations (OFA) will be identified to be satisfied within the first year of course. Students with OFA will have to carry out an e-learning recovery path prepared by the Professor of the interested areas, in order to complete their initial preparation. Professor will be at the students' disposal for further information and clarifications. At the end of the course there will be an ongoing test (OFA Recovery Test). The dates and place of the test will be advertised on the Study Program web page. The OFAs are supposed to be satisfied once they have been passed, with a favourable outcome, both the ongoing test and the final examination of the teaching in which the subject of OFA is included.

Final Examination:
Orale

CHEMISTRY AND PROPEDEUTICAL BIOCHEMISTRY: Written exam with two separate parts: a quiz of 10 questions with 5 answers, the right answers can be from 1 to 5; the second part contains 3 open questions. The total vote is considered sufficient when both parts are sufficiently answered.
BIOLOGY: quiz of 31 questions with 4 answers to choose, and 1 right answer to give.
For both the partial tests, in case the Professor needs to verify the knowledge of the subject by the student, an oral exam of 5-10 minutes can be followed.

The final vote will be the mean of the two partial exams.

Assessment:
Voto Finale

The integrated course of Structure and Functions of Biomolecules, including the teachings of Chemistry and Propaedeutic Biochemistry and Applied Biology, aims:
- to train students in the knowledge and understanding of the molecules of life, their characteristics and transformations in various reactions;
- to understand the principles of biophysical and biochemical methods applicable to prenatal and post-natal diagnostics as well as the diagnostic-clinical aspects related to medical genetics;.
The course has also the task to provide a unique scientific chemical/biological based vocabulary to render students able to deal with subsequent teachings.

CHEMISTRY: ATOMIC STRUCTURE, THE CHEMICAL BOND, SOLUTIONS, CHEMICAL REACTIONS AND CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM, pH, ALCOHOLS AND THEIR DERIVATIVES, ALDEHYDES AND KETONES, CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND THEIR DERIVATIVES, AMINES, CARBOHYDRATES, AMINO ACIDS AND LIPIDS

APPLIED BIOLOGY: The macromolecules of life. Eukariotic and prokariotic cells. Aploid and diploid organisms. Cellular replication: mitosis and meiosis. Examples of cellular cicles. DNA: From the discover to the structure. RNA: THe transcription. The ribosomes and the translation mechanism. Chromatin and chromsome structure. Introduction to the mutations. The genetic basis of the hereditary applied to the genealogical trees
