An intermediate (B1-B2) proficiency in English is required.
By the end of the academic year, students should have achieved B2+ to C1 CERF level (Common European Framework of Reference). This level will be assessed through a written and an oral exam.
WRITTEN EXAM
The written exam is a test of B2+/C1 English skills, as well as linguistic knowledge. Marks range from 1 to 30 (minimum of 18 to pass). It lasts 90 minutes and includes tasks on:
- Use of English;
- Reading comprehension;
- Listening comprehension;
- Writing;
- Linguistic knowledge.
Dictionaries are not allowed. To be admitted to the oral exam, student must pass the written exam. The written exam mark is valid for one year.
ORAL EXAM
Students will be assessed on their oral English skills, on topics covered during the lectures and tutorials. Marks range from 1 to 30 (minimum of 18 to pass).
The final mark will be the average of the marks of the written and the oral parts.
This module aims to enable students to develop upper-intermediate (B2 level) to advanced (C1 level) linguistic and communicative skills, with particular attention to different language styles and cultural contexts. The module will also introduce elements of English linguistics to enable students to develop a deeper awareness of English linguistic features and structures. Learning outcomes include:
• Comprehension of a wide range of long and complex texts, and identification of linguistic features and structures;
• Ability to express ideas fluently and effortlessly, using idioms and idiomatic expressions;
• Flexible and effective use of English for social, academic, and professional purposes;
• Ability to create well-structured texts on a variety of topics.
The module runs throughout the year and comprises lectures and tutorials. Lectures will alternate sessions aimed at developing reading, writing, and critical thinking skills to sessions introducing elements of English linguistics (e.g. phonology, morphology, syntax, grammar, semantics, pragmatics), essential for an informed approach to the analysis of English language. Tutorials will be aimed at developing listening and speaking skills.
The module comprises two weekly classes: one lecture with the module convenor and one tutorial with the tutor. Students will be required to engage actively with the module material both in class and at home. Tasks and exercises will be carried out and discussed. In-class individual and teamwork tasks will be designed to provide opportunities to acquire hands-on reading, writing, and linguistic skills. Tutorials and self-learning activities are an integral part of the module. Regular attendance to and active participation in the lectures and tutorials is therefore highly recommended.
