Requirements:

The prerequisites are a good knowledge of biochemistry

To verify the learning of the knowledge and skills imparted in class, an oral examination will take place together with the module of CELLULAR BIOCHEMISTRY, HUMAN SYSTEMS. The questions plan to verify the knowledge of the main clinical implications of the metabolism and structure of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and proteins.

Assessment:
Voto Finale

The course target is the acquisition by students of the fundamentals regulating the metabolism of molecules of biologic relevance. During the course there will be addressed clinical aspects where the metabolic processes play a critical role in the pathology outcome. The student will be guided to the understanding of the mechanisms that go under the generic name of metabolism, the processes of production and use of energy, the role of the signals (hormones, cytokines, growth factors, etc) in physiology and pathology. The student will learn the function of Biochemistry in clinical medicine, in diagnostic applications and drug therapy, with a learning addressed to the specificities of the profession. The course also aims to educate the student to know the biochemical approaches that have been used to define biological molecules as targets for the pharmacological activity of drugs and to know how to research independently the scientific information.

- clinical aspects of protein folding.
- clinical aspects of hemoglobin and heme metabolism
- clinical aspects of collagen structure and metabolism
- outline of clinical aspects of sugar metabolism, amino acids, lipids and nucleic acids.

- Biochimica - Bassi, Boffi et al, Edi-ermes
- Le basi della Biochimica - Ferrier - Zanichelli
- Biochimica medica - Tettamanti – Piccin

For this module the teacher will provide lectures (10 hours) which will be integrated into the module of CELLULAR BIOCHEMISTRY, HUMAN SYSTEMS. Slide shows are expected (generally in Italian but, in cases of recently published material, also in English). During the explanation in the classroom the students are invited to interact with the teacher with questions and curiosities. During the lessons, the teacher will also present cases and daily facts that can help understand the application / importance of the subjects taught.

Students are required to attend classes as established in the academic regulations of the course of study and to sign the attendance sheet in order to take the exam.
The teacher undertakes to make available the presentations projected in lectures and other material of interest (articles) through the University computer platforms (eg elearning) to which students have access

In the teacher's presentations there will be links to web pages for further information.

For reception students make an appointment by email with the teacher.
