HYDRAULICS AND HYDRAULIC PLANTS

Degree course:
Corso di First cycle degree in ENGINEERING FOR WORK AND ENVIRONMENT SAFETY
Academic year when starting the degree:
2020/2021
Year:
2
Academic year in which the course will be held:
2021/2022
Course type:
Compulsory subjects, characteristic of the class
Credits:
9
Period:
First Semester
Standard lectures hours:
72
Detail of lecture’s hours:
Lesson (72 hours)
Requirements:

Preparatory subjects (mandatory): Mathematical Analysis B (SCV 0007) and Physics (SCV 0023).

Final Examination:
Scritto e Orale Congiunti

- In order to assess effective learning, the exam is arranged into two written tests (concerning the first and second module of the course, respectively). Time allowed is 2-2.5 hours for the first test, 1-1.5 hours for the second one.
- These two tests are equivalent with regards to the final evaluation.
- Written tests do not include theory questions (the candidate can consult texts, notes, etc.), but consist in computations of simplified schemes by pocket calculator only: quantitatively correct results are therefore needed to achieving positive evaluation.
- An oral exam can be optionally required.
- The final rating is in thirtieths.
- Both written tests should be "classified" (score greater than or equal to 12/30); the average of the two scores should be at least 18/30.
- The result of the oral exam could contribute to the final score up to a maximum of 25-30%.

Assessment:
Voto Finale

AIM OF THE COURSE
This course aims at providing knowledge of:
1. Basic principles of hydraulics and related physical variables
2. Application of these principles to functioning and computation of selected hydraulic structures.
Within the Course of Study in “Engineering for Environmental and Work Safety”, the course is included in cultural area “basics of engineering”.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Calculate the pressure distribution in fluids at rest
2. Calculate hydrostatic forces on plane surfaces
3. Calculate head loss in pipe flows
4. Analyze basic schemes for liquid conveyance
5. Analyze basic schemes of urban storm drainage.

According to its title, the course is subdivided into two main blocks, HYDRAULICS and HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES, respectively. Related contents are detailed in the following. The hours of classroom lesson concerning the specific subjects are reported in brackets. The overall number of hours is 72.

First module of the course – HYDRAULICS [36]:
- stress concept in continuum mechanics [2],
- Stevin’s law, pressure measurement [2],
- hydrostatic force on plane surfaces [8],
- continuity equation [2],
- ideal fluid, Bernoulli’s theorem and main applications [4],
- piezometric head and total head of gradually varied flows [4],
- friction head loss in pipe flows, Moody’s chart [4],
- head loss by sudden expansion, Borda’s formula [2],
- pipe flow computation [8].

Second module of the course – HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES [36]:
- friction head loss in pipe flows by empirical formulae (e.g., Chezy, Hazen-Williams, etc.) [4],
- pumps and valves [2],
- flow through porous media, Darcy’s law [2],
- basics of well hydraulics (i.e., Dupuit–Forchheimer theory) [4],
- hydraulic computation of simplified pipe-schemes for water transport under pressure [10],
- flow in pipe network systems, Hardy Cross method [6],
- rain gauging and basic elaboration of pluviometer data [2],
- uniform flow in open channels [4],
- preliminary design of storm drainage system [2].
