Course description and learning objectives

The student will acquire a survey on Italian History of Art from the Ist century A.D. to the XVth century, and will be able to compare the topics with a basic knowledge of Mediterranean and European History of Art. The iconographic and iconologic aspects, the patronage role and the public perception of Art have to be developed with special care.
Among the cognitive results expected can be indicated the primarly skills for a visual analysis of the art work, the use of the appropriate vocabulary; it is required a comparison ability, considering the correct space and time outiline. It means to apply knowledge accurately to comment on works of art and architecture, considering also geographical and chronological data, to identify stylistic characteristics and meaning of the art work using the proper language and showing the student’s knowledge comparing different phenomenons and periods.

Final assessment
The final examination consists of an oral exam with three general questions (i.g. Longobard art; one Romanesque building selected by the student; Giotto) related to the whole chronological period studied (i.g one question on the phase from Ist to VIth century, another on the period from VIIth to XIIth century and the last one on the XIIIth-XVth century). The valuation is in thirtieth. The mark includes one primarly valuation based on the answers to the three questions, which can be little modified considering the whole knowledge of the subject. The valuation is based on the knowledge of the topic, the ability of visual reading, the ability of employing correctly technical terminology relating to the practices of painting, sculpture, architecture, the correct space-time outline of phenomenons singularly and in the whole historic period considered.
