The course in Languages and Protection of Artistic and Musical Heritage aims to provide students with the knowledge and tools necessary to read, understand and communicate archaeological and historical-artistic heritage. It will be developed around two main thematic areas. The first introductory theme will be linked to the specialist vocabulary of the discipline and the definitions of cultural heritage and protection, as understood in both their historical origins and the relevant legislation, with particular regard to the most recent Italian and European laws. The second core will concern the languages of Italian cultural heritage artistic productions, examined both from a formal-descriptive point of view (techniques, themes and iconographic choices of a work) and by investigating the meaning underlying their creation, as well as the places and forms of enhancement and communication of cultural heritage that contribute to the transmission, conservation and dissemination of artistic and musical heritage. The topics will be illustrated through an approach that aims to provide students with a theoretical and critical framework on the subject, as well as specialist knowledge in the artistic and archaeological fields, enabling them to acquire useful tools for working in interdisciplinary contexts related to cultural heritage. Among the various topics explored during the course will be the conception and staging of an exhibition, museum education, social media and new digital forms of dissemination, “Public Heritage” (and Public Archaeology), and the “performing arts” as a medium of communication for culture and the dissemination of scientific research to a wide audience. This part will be developed using paradigmatic case studies (museums, archaeological sites, UNESCO heritage sites, etc.), selected based on their representativeness about the topic in question. The course will enable students to acquire the technical language of artistic and musical heritage and allow them to develop cross-disciplinary skills in the field of cultural heritage, allowing them to devise and design strategies for the dissemination and enhancement of cultural heritage using the tools and languages of the discipline.

• Artistic and musical cultural heritage: historical overview and definition • Protection of cultural heritage • The language of artistic and musical heritage legislation (Italian and European) • The language of artistic and musical heritage • Theoretical aspects of archaeology and art history • Geographical, historical and cultural context of case studies • Strategies for promoting and communicating cultural heritage • The language of dissemination between scientific research and communication to the public

Classes will be held in the classroom through lectures with PPT presentations. The course also includes seminars by experts and specialists in the field and educational visits. Manuals and specific essays on the topics covered in the lectures will be provided during the course. They will constitute the study material for the learning assessment exam. Given the variety of the topics, attendance at lectures is recommended; if this is not possible, the exam programme must be agreed with the lecturer.
