APPROACH OF METABOLIC PATHOLOGIE
Teaching activity concerns in particular the following topics: general concepts on physical activity; adaptive responses to exercise; definition, epidemiology, clinical features of the main metabolic pathologies (diabetes mellitus, obesity, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis); principles of the prescription of physical exercise in the patient suffering from diabetes mellitus, obesity, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis.
General concepts on physical activity: definition of physical activity and physical exercise; parameters for evaluating the intensity of physical activity.
Physiology of the use of energy substrates.
Adaptive responses to physical exercise: the autonomic phase and the metabolic phase.
Effects of exercise on hormone secretion: insulin, glucagon, cortisol, GH, and other hormones (ADH, aldosterone and renin, thyroid hormones).
Diabetes mellitus: classification, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical picture, diagnostic criteria, acute and chronic complications, hints of therapy; the prescription of physical exercise in the patient with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Obesity: classification, epidemiology, pathogenesis, complications, hints of therapy; the prescription of physical exercise in the obese patient.
Dyslipidemias: classification, epidemiology, clinical picture, hints of therapy; the prescription of physical exercise in the dyslipidemic patient.
Metabolic syndrome: definition, epidemiology, diagnostic criteria, clinical implications.
Osteoporosis: definition, classification, epidemiology, risk factors, clinical picture, diagnostic criteria, hints of therapy; the prescription of physical exercise in the patient suffering from osteoporosis.
Teaching activity takes place through lectures in the classroom performed with the use of support material (slides). Active interaction with the teacher is encouraged to promote understanding of the topics covered. The content presented in class is made available on the Moodle page reserved for teaching.
The learning of the Course contents is based on the slides presented and explained by the teacher during the lectures. For further information, the recommended text is the following: Endocrinologia e attività motorie, a cura di A. Lenzi, G. Lombardi, E. Martino, F. Trimarchi Ed. Edra, Milano.
