EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND ASSESSMENT TEST

Degree course:
Corso di First cycle degree in ENVIRONMENTAL AND NATURAL SCIENCES
Academic year when starting the degree:
2023/2024
Year:
1
Academic year in which the course will be held:
2023/2024
Course type:
Optional subjects
Language:
Italian
Final Examination:
Orale

The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, on topics that include comparisons of numerical quantities, symbolic expressions, equations and inequalities, elements of Euclidean and Cartesian geometry, simple problems of probability and combinatorics and understanding mathematical texts.
To pass the test, the student must correctly answer at least 10 questions. The result is immediately made available at the end of the test.
The student can take the test only once, through the e-learning platform with restricted access with credentials provided by the University at the end of the enrollment procedure.
Registration for the test takes place by making a reservation by accessing the reserved area https://uninsubria.esse3.cineca.it/Home.do
The student who does not pass the initial knowledge verification test is assigned an additional educational obligation (OFA) which provides for the compulsory attendance of a remedial mathematics course, at the end of which a further test is required, by the end of the first semester of the first year of the course. In the event of late enrollments, the CCdS may decide to provide extraordinary test dates and dedicated office hours, to support the students to whom the OFAs are attributed. Students who still fail to pass the test after the above tests will be required to pass the Mathematics exam at the end of the first semester of the first year, before being able to take other exams. Enrollment in the second year of the course in a regular position is in any case bound to the fulfillment of the OFA by 30 September of the calendar year following that of enrollment. On the other hand, the student who does not take the initial knowledge verification test is subject to a career block, and therefore cannot take exams.

Assessment:
Giudizio Finale

The test aims to verify the basic knowledge of mathematics, geometry and probability topics. This knowledge, which should be typical of students with a secondary school qualification, is the basic tools essential for tackling the training course envisaged by the degree course. In fact, these are essential topics in order to be able to outline a symbolic and mathematical representation of the problems, which will then be better defined and dealt with in depth in the programs of the various teaching units.
The student will have to demonstrate familiarity with the fundamental elements of algebra, to be able to simplify an algebraic expression, to know the basic properties of geometric figures, to be able to use Cartesian coordinates and to have a basic knowledge of the frequentalist approach to probabilities regarding simple problems. Furthermore, the test also aims to verify the mastery, albeit limited, of mathematical reasoning and appropriate language.
