In order to follow the course, adequate knowledge of cytology, molecular biology, biochemistry and physiology is required.
Oral examination. The students need to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the topics presented during the course. They will also be evaluated for their ability to dissert a short presentation (pptx is welcome), concerning a topic related to the contents of the course and based on the research articles that they have freely consulted. Basic knowledge will contributes for 75% of the final score. The presentation will contributes for 25% of the final score. Minimal score is fixed at 18/30.
The aim of the course is to introduce the biological and molecular aspects of staminal cells, and their derivatives, to explore how these mechanisms lead and support the study and cure some patological conditions. Emphasis will be given to the intrinsic potential of medical devices comprised of biocompatible 3D scaffolds associated with cells and their derivatives to use in regenerative medicine.
This course will also provide the students the opportunity to grow up as learners and as effective contributors by:
1. be responsible for their own learning and for the insights of the study
2.to take advantage of all the available resources and academic staff knowledge to integrate the lecture material.
3. to work in team, in particular during the laboratory experiences
4. to develop communication skills by effective interaction with peers and academic staff.
1- Lectures (36 h)
Section 1: Stem cells and regenerative medicine.
- The biology of embryonic and adult stem cells.
- Stem cells as model for in vitro and in vivo experiments to study diseases
- Stem cells and cell derivatives in regenerative medicine
- Natural and synthetic scaffold: composition, structure, characteristics and the rule of extracellular matrix
Section 2:
- regulation and law in Italy and Europe about the cell therapies
- from the bench to the bed concept
- clinical application and case presentation
2- Laboratory experiences (18 h)
The practical lessons consist of:
- use of a 3D printer to prepare small scaffold and prosthesis
- preparation and accomplishment of viability and proliferation assay of cells seeded on the scaffold previously prepared
- arrangement of sample for optical and SEM observation
The course provides lectures-style guidance and laboratory experiences. Laboratory experiences are organized in order to work safety, independently but also as a team.
