WASTE AND WASTEWATER TREATMENT
Knowledge of inorganic / organic chemistry and physical chemistry
Final oral exam with single final grade
At the end of the course, the student will know the different types of waste and the integrated system for their correct management. The study of the different pollutants and the life cycle of the products will allow the knowledge of the possible environmental and process criticalities associated to an incorrect waste management, to the different types of treatment and to the technologies for their disposal. The student will acquire the basic skills for the correct identification and management of the main classes of waste and will be able to use the appropriate databases to classify and identify the best upgrading strategy for both domestic and industrial waste. The student will acquire a basic preparation of the water cycle and of treatment processes related to drinking water and the disposal of wastewater.
Waste treatment:
European and national reference legislation on waste
Pollutants: definition, identification, danger, and properties that govern their distribution in the environment and their persistence
Types of waste and integrated management
Waste recycling and Life Cycle Assessment
The waste landfill, incinerator and thermal treatment of waste
Alternative treatment technologies: pyrolysis, gasification and anaerobic digestion
Biogas: production, use and prospects for valorization
Production of chemicals from waste: the biorefinery
Pollutant control technologies in liquid effluents:
The water cycle, human influence, and environmental legislation
Main pollutants and acceptability limits in wastewater
Purification processes and technologies
Treatment of sewage sludge and possible reuse
The course will be delivered through lectures
