REMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED SITES

Degree course:
Corso di First cycle degree in ENGINEERING FOR WORK AND ENVIRONMENT SAFETY
Academic year when starting the degree:
2022/2023
Year:
2
Academic year in which the course will be held:
2023/2024
Course type:
Compulsory subjects, characteristic of the class
Language:
Italian
Credits:
9
Period:
Second semester
Standard lectures hours:
76
Detail of lecture’s hours:
Lesson (64 hours), Exercise (12 hours)
Requirements:

There are no preliminary restrictions. Anyway, the knowledge of the following subjects: Microbiology applied to the environment, Inorganic and organic chemistry, Sanitary environmental engineering and Hydraulics is strongly recommended.

Final Examination:
Orale

Written exam: 5 questions with open answer (max 25/30, each question has a different mark depending on the complexity of the question itself) and 5 questions with multiple choice (max 5/30, each question has a different mark depending on the number of choices, with a little penalty in case of mistake), 1 hour and a half. No mid-term tests will be performed. An oral test, in order to better understand the real level of knowledge, could be required, only by Prof.ssa Cristiana Morosini, once corrected the written papers.
The examination will be based on all the topics of the course (E-learning platform) and both applying knowledge and communication skills/making judgements will be evaluated.
General rules of behaviour to be adopted during examination and how to reject a mark will be explained by Prof. Cristiana Morosini before the examination itself and during frontal lectures.

Assessment:
Voto Finale

The main goal of the course is to contribute to train students able to face environmental problems, with particular regard to the field of contaminated site remediation, according to what is declared in A2.a of SUA CdS.

At the end of the course, the student will achieve the following results, according to what is required by the Degree Course:
-law understanding;
-knowledge of the most widespread technologies for the characterization, remediation and management of contaminated sites;
-achievement of the administrative and procedure steps to follow in case of site contamination;
-risk assessment;
-Best Available Technologies for contaminated site remediation.
Communication skills and making judgements will be acquired as well.

1. Law (20 hours, of which 16 hours of frontal lectures and 4 hours of lab exercises): Comparison between D.M. 471/99 and D.Lgs 152/06; Administrative and procedure steps; Risk assessment.
2. Geology and hydrogeology rudiments (8 hours of frontal lectures): Soil; Groundwater.
3. Contaminants of interest and mechanisms of action (3 hours of frontal lectures).
4. Fate and transport in soil and groundwater (2 hours of frontal lectures).
5. Sampling and monitoring (10 hours of frontal lectures).
6. Factors of choice and classification of remediation technologies (2 hours of frontal lectures).
7. Safety measures (10 hours of frontal lectures): Capping; Vertical cut off walls; Hydraulic barriers; Permeable Reactive Barriers.
8. In situ chemical-physical treatments (4 hours of frontal lectures): Soil Vapour Extraction; Solidification/Stabilization; Air Sparging; Multi Phase Extraction.
9. Ex situ chemical-physical treatments (3 hours of frontal lectures): Soil Washing; Chemical Extraction; Pump & Treat.
10. In situ heat (thermal) treatments (1 hour of frontal lecture).
11. Ex situ heat (thermal) treatments (1 hour of frontal lecture): Incineration; Thermal Desorption.
12. In situ and ex situ biological treatments and Phytoremediation (4 hours of frontal lectures).
13. Field exercises/technical trips: 8 hours;
14. Professional workshops.

Frontal lectures (64 hours), labs/exercises and technical trips (12 hours), professional workshops. All the issues will be dealt with by Prof. Cristiana Morosini and, in some cases, she will be supported by experts coming from other universities or companies or public authorities.

The reception time has to be decided by contacting Prof. Cristiana Morosini by mail (cristiana.morosini@uninsubria.it).
