In this teaching, the activity aims to build basic knowledge regarding Radiation Protection and to develop elementary skills and competencies as a first approach to the subject.
Specifically, at the end of the course, the student will be able to:

- Orientation in the field of radiation protection; in particular, through knowledge of Legislative Decree n.101 of 2020, will know how to orientate in the basic safety standards relating to protection against the dangers arising from exposure to ionizing radiation.
- Know the main methods of Diagnostic Imaging using ionizing radiation.

The main topics covered in the teaching are:

- Historical Background on Radiation Protection

- Physics of Ionizing Radiation

- Discovery of X-rays

- Biological Damage from Ionizing Radiation

- Free radicals

- Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation

• Deterministic damages
• Stochastic damages

- Main quantities in radiation protection

- Objectives and Basic Principles of Radiation Protection
• Motivation
• Optimization
• Dose Limitation

- Radiation protection in healthcare
• Medical exposures
• Professional exhibitions
• Population exposures

- Legislative Decree No. 101 of 2020
