The final exam will be written and will last two hours: students will be asked to answer four open questions related to the topics covered during the course. Final grade will be express in thirtieths (minimum 18/30 to pass).

The course is aimed at introducing students to the political, cultural, economic, social changes of Europe during the 19th century, starting from the revolutions of the second half of the 18th century and ending with the end of the 19th century. Subsequently the course will focus on the area of the former Republic of Venice, highlighting its central role in the 19th century in the Italian context as well as in the European one.

The course addresses issues of historical methodology, such as sources, periodization, historical interpretation, as well as investigates the central themes of the nineteenth-century European history, i.e. The 18th century revolutions; The Napoleonic Era; The Restoration; The Greek Revolution; The Belgian War of Independence; The 1848 Revolutions; Italian Unification; The Crimean War; The German Unification; The Colonialism; The Balkan Wars.
The last part of the course will focus on the analysis of the “Venice case” and its pivotal role in this age. The following theme will be addressed:The end of the Republic of Venice and Napoleonic campaigns in Italy; Venice at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century: from the Provisional Municipality to the first Austrian rule; Venice under Napoleon; The Congress of Vienna and the Restoration of Austrian rule of Venice (1815-1848); Daniele Manin and the Venetian Revolution of 1848-49; The last Austrian rule of Venice and the annexation of Venice to the Kingdom of Italy (1849-1866).

The course consists of 50 hours of lecture.
