RADIATION PROTECTION
As for prerequisites, knowledge of Physics and Human Anatomy are necessary; notions of Medical Pathology are also useful.
At the end of the Course there is an examination which generally involves a written test (quiz test).
In this teaching, the activity aims to build basic knowledge regarding Radiation Protection and to develop elementary skills and competencies as a first approach to the subject.
Specifically, at the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Orientation in the field of radiation protection; in particular, through knowledge of Legislative Decree n.101 of 2020, will know how to orientate in the basic safety standards relating to protection against the dangers arising from exposure to ionizing radiation.
- Know the main methods of Diagnostic Imaging using ionizing radiation.
The main topics covered in the teaching are:
- Historical Background on Radiation Protection
- Physics of Ionizing Radiation
- Discovery of X-rays
- Biological Damage from Ionizing Radiation
- Free radicals
- Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation
• Deterministic damages
• Stochastic damages
- Main quantities in radiation protection
- Objectives and Basic Principles of Radiation Protection
• Motivation
• Optimization
• Dose Limitation
- Radiation protection in healthcare
• Medical exposures
• Professional exhibitions
• Population exposures
- Legislative Decree No. 101 of 2020
- Physical Surveillance
• Worker Classification
• Classification of working environments
- Medical Surveillance
- Radiation Protection Standards
• Means of protection
• Signal lights
• Personal dosimeters
• Radiodiagnostic equipment
The course is based on lectures with the use of slides. In order to promote the knowledge of the Radioprotection standards, practical examples of their use in Radiodiagnostics, Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy are given.
