ORGANIC CHEMISTRY 2: LABORATORY

Degree course:
Corso di First cycle degree in CHEMICAL AND INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY
Academic year when starting the degree:
2021/2022
Year:
2
Academic year in which the course will be held:
2022/2023
Course type:
Compulsory subjects, characteristic of the class
Credits:
6
Period:
Second semester
Standard lectures hours:
72
Detail of lecture’s hours:
Exercise (72 hours)
Requirements:

Content’s knowledge of General Chemistry course and of Organic Chemistry 1 course

The assessment will take into account both the reports regarding the experiences carried out in the laboratory and the commitment shown by the students. Furthermore, a final unknown test will allow the assessment of the ability to manage, plan and conduct the laboratory operations learned during the course in an autonomous and safe manner.
The topics covered in the theoretical course will be verified in the written examination of the Organic Chemistry 2 course (Module A).

Assessment:
Voto Finale

a) Theoretical course: the course provides the knowledge for either recognizing the chemical hazard or working in a safe conditions in an organic chemistry laboratory. It gives the theoretical knowledge of the main procedures of synthesis, purification and isolation of an organic compound. Basic introduction of the main characterization methods for organic compounds is also given.
b) Practical course: students carry out the simplest operations of synthesis, purification and isolation of organic compounds; they are driven toward the acquisition of a clear scientific language through the production of scientific reports.

a) Theoretical course: Hazards and safety in an organic chemistry laboratory. Theoretical and practical approach to an organic reaction. Introduction to purification techniques: crystallization, solvent extraction, simple and fractional distillation, thin layer and column chromatography. Determination of the minimum formula and of unsaturation number. Spectroscopy fundamentals (IR, NMR) for the characterization of organic functional groups.

b) Practical course:. Execution by the student of synthesis reactions and fundamental operations of isolation and purification of an organic compound. Determination of physical properties and use of spectroscopic techniques
