For each discussed disease, the following basic topics will be discussed: definition, epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology, symptoms and signs, diagnosis, prognosis, therapy.

Respiratory diseases: respiratory pathophysiology (hypoxemia, hypercapnia, obstructive and restrictive syndromes) and oxygen therapy; bronchial asthma; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema); bronchiectasias; infectious pneumonia; pulmonary embolism.

Cardiovascular diseases: ischemic cardiomyopathy (acute coronary syndrome and stable angina pectoris); systemic arterial hypertension; dyslipidemia; peripheral artery disease; deep venous thrombosis; acute and chronic heart failure; ischemic stroke; syncope

Endocrine disorders: hypothyroidism; hyperthyroidism; diabetes mellitus; Cushing’s syndrome

Urinary diseases: acute renal failure; chronic renal failure

Immunorheumatologic diseases: rheumatoid arthritis; gout and hyperuricemia; systemic lupus erythematosus; osteoarthritis

Haematological diseases: anaemia; acute and chronic leukaemia; lymphoma

Gastrointestinal diseases: chronic inflammatory diseases (Crohn’s disease e Ulcerative Colitis); Irritable bowel syndrome; dyspepsia; gastroesophageal reflux

Infectious diseases: HIV and AIDS; bacterial meningitis; EBV infectious; rubella, mumps, and measles; influenza and influenza-like syndrome; tuberculosis (TBC)

Principles of Gerontology: definition and epidemiology of the aging; biology of the aging; theory of the aging; physiological aging modifications, multidimensional geriatric assessment.
Principal clinical manifestations of the elderly: fall with/without faintness, delirium, adverse drug reactions, oedematous syndromes, arthropathies, acute vascular events, dyspnea, urinary incontinence, depression, protein-energy malnutrition, hypoglycemia

Aim of the course is to systematically discuss most common diseases of Internal Medicine and of medical specialisations, including Geriatry.
In particular, for every disease the following topics will be discussed: definition, epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology, symptoms and signs, diagnosis, prognosis,
therapy

The course includes frontal lessons, all given by the lecturer of the course. Lessons are supported by PPT slide projection. If required by the students, the teacher can devote the first part of each lesson to clarification and insights on the topics discussed in the previous lessons. Students can also ask for clarifications on specific topics during the lesson.
