Requirements: 

As for prerequisites, knowledge of Human Anatomy and Physics are necessary; notions of
Medical and Surgical Pathology are also useful.

In this propaedeutic course, the teaching activity aims at building basic knowledge in Imaging Diagnostics and to develop elementary skills and competences as a first approach to the subject.
Specifically, at the end of the course, the student will be able to
- Orient themselves in the field of Diagnostic Imaging; in particular, they will be able to distinguish the different methods on the basis of the physical principles on which they are based.
- Know the main clinical applications of the different Imaging methods.

The main topics included in the teaching are:

- History of Radiology (from the discovery of X-rays to the present day)
- Physical principles and formation of the radiographic image
- Main clinical applications of Conventional Radiology
Radiography of the thorax (radiopacity and radiotransparency, etc..)
Radiography of the abdomen (radiogram by levels and direct radiogram of the abdomen)
Dynamic fluoroscopic study (study of swallowing and digestive tract)
- Physical principles and image formation in ultrasonography
- Main clinical applications of ultrasound examination and color-Doppler echo examination
- Physical principles and image formation in CT
- Main clinical applications of CT examination
CT in urgency
Angio-CT
CT in staging neoplasms
Colon CT
Entero-CT
Cardio-CT
- Physical principles and image formation in MRI
- Main clinical applications of MRI examination

The course is based on frontal lessons with the use of slides. In order to promote critical reflection and to guide the students to the interpretation of the images, clinical cases with images of the different methods are presented and discussed collegially.
