As for prerequisites, knowledge of Human Anatomy is necessary; notions of Medical and Surgical Pathology are also useful.
At the end of the course there will be an exam that can be, depending on the case, oral or written (quiz test).
In this teaching the activity aims to build basic knowledge regarding Interventional Radiology and to develop elementary skills and competences as a first approach to the subject.
Specifically, at the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Orient themselves in the field of Interventional Radiology; in particular they will know how to distinguish the different procedures in the vascular and extravascular field.
- Know the main applications of Interventional Radiology in the oncological field.
The main topics covered in the teaching are:
- History of Interventional Radiology
- Vascular procedures:
• Embolization
• Transluminal Angioplasty
• Locoregional fibrinolysis
• Vascular stents
• Caval Filters
- Extravascular procedures:
• Superficial and deep organ needle biopsies
• Drainage of abscesses or collections
• Gastrostomy
• Dilation of hollow viscera
• Thermoablation of neoplasms
- Biliary Interventional
• External, internal-external biliary drainage
• Internal biliary stent
• Bilioplasty
• Endocavitary biopsy
- Urological Interventional
• Nephrostomy
• Ureteral stent
• Endocavitary biopsy

The Course is based on frontal lectures with use of slides. In order to promote critical thinking and to guide the students in the interpretation of the images, clinical cases treated with different procedures of Interventional Radiology are presented and collegially commented.
