Knowledge of the physiology of the hematopoietic system
oral exam
to know the diagnostic and pathophysiology processes of the main haematological diseases
The course is divided into the following areas:
1. Classification of hematopoiesis and morphological evaluation of the peripheral blood smear
2. Classification of anemias
3. Myeloid leukemias
4. Lymphoproliferative disorders
5. Meaning of electrophoresis and plasma cell disorders
6. Role of PCR and NGS in chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms
In the first part of the course the mechanisms underlying bone marrow hematopoiesis will be exposed. The hemochromocytometric examination will be detailed and the tools to interpret the morphology of a peripheral blood smear will be provided. The lectures will then focus on the exposure of the main hematological pathologies: anemia, myeloid leukemias, lymphoproliferative and plasma cell disorders. At the end, new techniques of molecular diagnostics will be exposed (PCR, Polymerase Chain Reaction, and NGS, Next Generation Sequencing) with particular application to Philadelphia negativechronic myeloproliferative neoplasms

During the course clinical cases relating to diseases addressed will be discussed with the trainees
