As classes and tutorials are fully taught in Italian and English, students will be expected to be proficient in Italian (CEFR C1) and in English (CEFR C1) with some C1 competences.
Students who do not meet the language requirements are to complete specific computer-based language training and a self-study language programme at the University Language Lab.
Students holding a C1 certificate issued by MIUR accredited institutions will be exempted from taking the written language test. (The updated list of MIUR Accredited Test Centres is available at://hubmiur.pubblica.istruzione.it/web/istruzione/dg-personale-scolastico/enti-certificatori-lingue-straniere). The certificate is to be submitted to the course lecturer during the academic year or before taking the examinations.
Thanks to the agreement between the University of Insubria and Cambridge English Language Assessment (officially recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education and Research), the University will host test sessions for students wishing to obtain Cambridge certifications.

a C1-level language test (duration: 90 minutes, NO DICTIONARY) including:
Use of English
Reading comprehension
writing
listening comprehension
A test (20 multiple-choice questions) on the theoretical part covered in the institutional course (duration: 30 minutes).
A translation from English into Italian for a total of about 100 words (duration: 60 minutes).
Dictionaries are allowed for the translation test ONLY. No dictionaries are allowed for the language test.
Students must pass all four parts of the written examination to access the oral examination (minimum required 18/30). The written test results will have a validity of one year.
Oral exam
Students will be assessed on their oral performance in English, basing on the topics covered in the Pathways manuals. The oral exam will be evaluated in /30.
The final mark will result in the grade point average of the written and the oral parts.
The course aims to enable students to develop their linguistic mediation skills (reading and writing), with particular attention on different language styles and cultural contexts. Elements of theory and practice of translation will be also provided. Students will be able to choose the most appropriate translation strategies to translate general and specialized texts through linguistic, text and context analysis.
Tutorials are an integral part of the course and are designed to enhance English communication skills in a professional and academic perspective. Students will develop their listening comprehension and speaking skills in order to use the English language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. They will be able to produce clear, well-structured and articulate texts on complex issues, mastering speech and discourse structures, linking and cohesion techniques as required by the advanced level of Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR). The abilities include:
Comprehension of a wide range of long and complex texts and recognition of the nuances of meaning
Ability to express ideas spontaneously and fluently without excessive effort using idioms
Flexible and effective use of the language for social, academic and professional purposes
Ability to create well structured and detailed texts on complex topics, showing competence in the use of connectives and elements of cohesion
The institutional course lasts one year and is divided into two modules.
The first module will cover the activities contained in Pathways. Reading, Writing, and Critical Thinking 4. These will be flanked by lectures on translation theory and practice. The most important linguistic differences will be analysed using the contrastive analysis theoretical framework.

Students will be asked to work in class and at home. Writing assignments and translated texts will be discussed and reviewed during lessons. In-class individual and teamwork tasks will be designed to provide opportunities to acquire hands-on reading, writing, and translation skills. Regular and active participation is highly recommended.
Tutorials and guided self-learning activities in the university lab are an integral part of the course.
