Knowledge of contents of General Chemistry course and of Organic Chemistry 1 course.
The students will be evaluated by their interest and diligence shown in their learning process as well as by the scientific reports of the practical experiences carried out in the laboratory. Furthermore, a final unknown practical experience will assess the acquired abilities to plan, perform, and accomplish laboratory operations in an independent and safe manner.
The topics covered in the theoretical course will be verified in the written examination of the Organic Chemistry 2 course (Module A).
Theoretical course: the course provides the knowledge for either recognizing the chemical hazard or working in safe conditions in an organic chemistry laboratory. It gives the theoretical knowledge of the main procedures of synthesis, purification and isolation of an organic compound. Basic introduction of the main characterization methods for organic compounds is also given.
Practical course: students will carry out simply operations of synthesis, purification and isolation of organic compounds; they will acquire the ability to recognize and to solve practical problems that may come up during a synthetic reaction or a work up. they are driven toward the acquisition of a clear scientific language through the production of scientific reports.
Theoretical course: Hazards and safety in an organic chemistry laboratory. Theoretical and practical approaches to an organic reaction. Introduction to purification techniques: crystallization, solvent extraction, simple and fractional distillation, thin layer and column chromatography. Determination of the minimum formula and of unsaturation number. Spectroscopy fundamentals (IR, NMR) for the characterization of organic functional groups.
Practical course: Synthetic reactions, fundamental operations of isolation, purification and characterization through physical properties and spectroscopic techniques of an organic compound will be performed by each student.
