The final exam will be written and will last two hours: students will be asked to answer three questions related to the topics covered during the course. Final grade will be express in thirtieths (minimum 18/30 to pass).
The course is aimed at introducing students to the main events of the Early Modern European History (1492-1815) with a particular focus on the History of Venice from the first settlements in the lagoon to the end of the Republic in 1797.
History of the Republic of Venice from a political, social, economic and cultural point of view.
The following themes will be addressed: the origin of Venice; Venice and Byzantium; the main organs of government and the procedure for the election of the Doge; Venice vs Genoa (13th-14th centuries); the conquest of the mainland; Venice and the Ottoman Empire; the War of the League of Cambrai; the Battle of Lepanto; Venice vs Pope Paolo V; the Bedmar’s plot; Venice and the Thirteen Years’ War; Venice vs the Ottoman Empire: Cretan and Morean Wars; politics and reformations in the eighteenth-century Venice; Napoleon and Venice: the end of the Republic.

The course consistes in lectures with occasional use of PowerPoint presentations. Movies and documentaries on the History of Venice will be played during the course.
