The course aims to present some basic concepts students may use in their future profession. In particular, emphasis is given to descriptive statistic tools as well as to the concept of measurement error.
Lessons are followed by home exercises; several examples from relevant literature are presented and discussed in class (for example on operator’s agreement in making a diagnosis based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance results).

Frequency distribution, mode, mean and median.
Variability: range, semi-range, variance and standard deviation. Variability coefficient. Symmetry. Variable transformations: log. Geometric mean. Box-plot.
Validity, accuracy and precision of measurements.
Accuracy: bias; sensitivity, specificity and ROC curve of a diagnostic test.
Precision: agreement among two different operators (Cohen’s K), reliability (variability coefficient, reliability coefficient, Bland-Altman plots).
