The achievement of the second year course of Analytical Chemistry I is required. Knowledges deriving from the first year courses of chemistry, mathematics and physics are required.
The goal of this course is to furnish theoretical knowledges about instrumental analytical chemistry. In particular, the course will furnish knowledges about: atomic absorption and atomic emission spectroscopy; mass spectrometry;gas-chromatography; high performance liquid chromatography; hyphenated techniques such as GC-MS, ICP-MS, LC-MS.
Students are expected to prove to possess deep understandings of the theoretical basis of hardware organization for the above mentioned instrumentations.
Linear and non linear instrumental calibration methods. Statistical analysis of uncertainties related to instrumental determination. Theory and application of flame- and electrothermal- atomic absorption spectroscopy. Theory and application of plasma-based atomic emission spectroscopy. Mass spectrometry: sources, analyzers and detectors. Limits and applications of mass scpectrometry. Gas-chromatography: theory and applications. Liquid chromatography: theory and applications. Hyphenated techniques: ICP-MS, GC-MS, LC-MS. Sample pretreatment and stabilisation methods. Field instrumentation. The laboratory part of the course will focus on the instrumental techniques explained during the class teaching.
