SOCIOLOGY OF TELEVISION AND SHOW BUSINESS

The course aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of the history and expressive languages of television, with particular attention to the Italian panorama. Through the lectures, the interventions of TV professionals and bibliographic tools, students will develop the skills necessary to analyze and understand the contemporary television system, its expressive modes and terminology, focusing specifically on television products in different channels of the offer (generalist TV, digital and thematic channels), taking into account all their components (textual characteristics, placement in the tv schedule, public, promotion, reference genres, production styles) and the figures that revolve around this system and contribute to its implementation and management.
The lessons will be organized in different modules:
1. In the first module basic principles and aspects of television history will be taught.
2. The second module will analyze various television genres: documentary, inquiry, magazine, talk, quiz, fiction, contamination experiments with factual entertainment and other entertainment genres.
3. Finally, in the third module some basic theoretical questions will be addressed, including the role of the public and its relationship with the television medium, the logic of television production, and the role of some protagonists of current and past television schedules.
