Oral assessment of learning. The exam will verify the understanding of notions delivered in lectures and from required bibliography. In the same way the evaluation will take into consideration both the skill in analyzing films and the knowledge of the history of cinema. The final evaluation will be determined by the knowledge and understanding (60%) and presentation, speaking and communication skills (40%)
There is the opportunity (OPTIONAL) to write an ongoing paper about one of the authors treated during the course (due by the end of the course, in digital format, by e-mail and between 25,000 and 30,000 characters in lenght). The form of the paper will be agreed with the teacher. The paper will replace one of the texts in the program and will be a topic during the oral test.
To pass the exam the student must obtain a minimum grade of 18 out of 30. The ongoing paper is valid all academic year long.

The course learning outcome is to develop a picture of the trends of contemporary cinema from the nineties of the twentieth century until today.
Special attention will be paid to the notion of auteur and to the notion of style.
The aim is to provide the learning of critical thinking skills in film analysis which consider:
- historical evolution of cinematographic authorship and its redefinition according to the historical and artistic context (20 hours)
- possibility of connection between artistic identity of the auteur and stylistic and linguistic elements (writing, staging, point of view...) (15 hours)
- relationship between author’s single film and filmography and lines of evolution of contemporary cinema (distribution, organization of film festivals) (15 hours)
- connections between historical processes of the contemporary and narration of the social, political and cultural processes of today’s world (14 hours).
Expected learnings outcomes:
- ability in film analysis
- knowledge of the contemporary cinematographic panorama. Both artistic and academic methodologies
- skills in recognition of elements, stylistic and narrative, which define a coherent and organized cinematographic process.

The course will analyze the following topics:
- notion of cinematographic authorship: historical perspective and contemporary declination
- methodological and cultural skills able to face the scientific study of contemporary cinema
- interpretation of audiovisual products aimed at the different areas of media communication
- role of images in cinematographic medium and in contemporary society
- role of film in the society of the last thirty years (a new mode of cinema spectatorship) and in relationship with related areas of relevance.

List of 15 movies to be watched will be provided by the teacher. Since it is an integral part of the course the study and understanding of movies is mandatory.
