The final check is oral (interview with the teacher).
General and/or specific questions will be used to assess the students' knowledge and preparation of teaching materials (manuals, readings, articles, maps) and the various sources (websites, statistics, tables, diagrams) used in the course, both from a mnemonic point of view and above all from a critical and logi-cal point of view, ascertaining the candidates' ability to interpret thematic maps and conceptual diagrams in an explanatory manner, to correlate quantitative and qualitative aspects and to be able to grasp the concatenation of causes and effects in territorial analysis.

The course has three main educational objectives:
- to illustrate the essential concepts of the geographical disciplines, the models of representation and the interpretative tools indispensable to represent and decode the complex interactions between the natural environment and the different anthropic contexts in their socio-cultural, political and economic dimen-sions;
- to deepen the geography of power in a local global perspective, with particular attention to the te-ma of violence and its representations, to the relationship between legality and illegality and to mafia crime
- to contextualize the methods and themes of research on the territory of the students and of the Univer-sity, with a transcalar approach open to the meeting with other research centres and scientific-cultural ac-tors.
The expected learning outcomes include:
- knowledge and increased awareness of the territory and its dynamics and problems
- ability to refine individual geographical perceptions and sensitivities
- ability to perceive and understand data and socio-economic dynamics of the territory
- ability to critically interpret Italian cultural, political and economic history and the narratives that make it up and disseminate it

Course topics
In the general part (approximately 40 hours) the course deals with the following topics:
- geo-graphy as representation and narration;
- territory and territorialisation;
- scale and transcalarity;
- populations and cultures;
- processes of diffusion and migration;
- communication systems;
- belief systems;
- political systems;
- economic systems;
- urban and regional systems;
- the Varese area and the Insubric region.
In the monographic part (approximately 16 hours) the course deals with the following topics:
- the geography of power;
- borders and frontiers between legality and illegality;
- organised crime and mafias;
- crime and globalisation;
- the representations of violence and crime;
- the mafias in Lombardy.

The passing of the exam involves the study of two books, a manual and a monograph, in addition to the material distributed and discussed during the course and made available to students on the Internet plat-form.
The manual and the monograph can be chosen among those listed below and among those of very re-cent publication that will be indicated during the course.

Convenzionale

The course takes place in frontal lessons. The activities of the course include the viewing of films and documentaries, the joint analysis of multimedia material (photos, images, audio, video, scientific and popular articles, maps) and consultation of websites. The contents of the course are linked to laboratory activities (field trips, guided tours and psychogeographic explorations) and to supplementary activities (seminars and initiatives).
