ADVANCED ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING - MOD. B
Environmental Engineering, General, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry (recommended, but not compulsory).
The students attending the B module of the Course must know the topics presented in the Courses of general Chemistry, Sanitary-Environmental Engineering, Environmental Impact Studies and Procedures, Contaminated land remediation, that are dispensed in a Bachelor Degree Course in the Environmental study area.
Aim of the course
Deepening of the concepts of Environmental Engineering and, in particular, of pollution control systems.
The course aims at refining the knowledge and skills necessary for the activity of a technician in the field of primary and waste water treatment and conveyed exhausted air emissions.
The topics of the program are selected in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the theoretical and practical issues related to the sector of water treatment, solid waste and conveyed gaseous emissions, relating the various theoretical topics with the main practical problems that a technician, at beginning of his career, may have to face.
Learning outcomes
Objectives of the course are to know the regulatory references, the methods for treating and managing wastewater, and conveyed gaseous effluents, entering into the merits of the calculation methods for a correct sizing and functionality verification. The most innovative purification technologies will also be considered.
Abilities
The expected learning outcomes consist in giving to the trained technician the specific skills for:
• consulting regulatory references
• characterizing a water supply or discharge, or a gaseous emission
• participating in the administrative management of wastewater and gaseous emissions
• setting up a treatment layout, possibly aimed at recovering water or waste and minimizing the final residues and the generated environmental impact
• designing the plants necessary for treating primary and waste water and fume or verify its dimensional adequacy in relation to the functional requirements
• collaborating in the management of treatment plants
• participating in the environmental monitoring of real systems
• minimizing the risks related to the workplaces for operators.
The B module of the Course intended to train Engineer, with a Master Degree, to work in the Waste management field with arguments that aims to give an exhaustive framework of theoretical and practical themes related to main plants for waste management, giving the links between the various topics to the current regulations.
The objective of the course is to give the knowledge and competence of:
• Law sources different levels needed to the activity,
• Waste different kinds,
• Approach choices for treatment plants that recover material and energy from waste and systems to reduce the environmental impact of each plant.
The expected learning result is to give to the Master Degree Engineer the basic skills to:
Consult Laws,
manage waste classification,
manage waste administration,
manage the study of a treatment and disposal chains with the aim to recover material and energy from waste and to minimize the residual waste and the environmental impact generated from the process,
manage plants design for waste treatment/disposal,
manage plants,
manage environment monitoring in real systems,
manage workers’ risks minimization.
The contents of the course are listed below. All the arguments are quite equivalents in terms of hours dedicated, except for the part dedicated to the calculation and the functional verification, where more space space is dedicated.
Module A.
WATERS
• Water characterization, technical legislation, wastewater treatment processes
• Qualitative characterization of water (physical and organoleptic parameters, chemical and biochemical parameters, microbiological parameters, sampling and water quality)
• Quantitative characterization of water (flow rates)
• Conventional treatment processes: reference legislation and sizing criteria
• Other innovative processes
• Hydraulic profile of a treatment plant
• Calculations for dimensioning and functional verification
• Costs and tariff of the discharges
• Reuse of treated wastewater
• Environmental impacts related to a treatment plant
• Energy saving
AIR
• Air pollution
• Conventional and innovative systems for the treatment of gaseous effluents
Apart from the description of the calculations for dimensioning, which will be given more space (about 8 hours), all other topics will have a similar presentation of about 4 hours.
