INTERNAL MEDICINE
Knowledge of biochemistry, physiology and anatomy is needed to understand the topics discussed in the course. There are no constraints on prerequisites.
a. to guide the student through the detailed study of the most prevalent pathologic processes related to specific systems.
b. to support the student to acquire understanding of the pathologic processes at several levels (molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, and systemic) with adequate insight into causes, clinical manifestations, and diagnosis.
c. to help the student to integrate the knowledge of Pathology with the study of all other Basic Sciences in the perspective of the Professional Education.
For each discussed disease, the following basic topics will be discussed: definition, epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology, symptoms and signs, diagnosis, prognosis, therapy.
Respiratory diseases: respiratory pathophysiology (hypoxemia, hypercapnia, obstructive and restrictive syndromes) and oxygen therapy; bronchial asthma; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema); bronchiectasias; infectious pneumonia; pulmonary embolism.
Cardiovascular diseases: ischemic cardiomyopathy (acute coronary syndrome and stable angina pectoris); systemic arterial hypertension; dyslipidemia; peripheral artery disease; deep venous thrombosis; acute and chronic heart failure; ischemic stroke; syncope
Endocrine disorders: hypothyroidism; hyperthyroidism; diabetes mellitus; Cushing’s syndrome
Urinary diseases: acute renal failure; chronic renal failure
Immunorheumatologic diseases: rheumatoid arthritis; gout and hyperuricemia; systemic lupus erythematosus; osteoarthritis
Haematological diseases: anaemia; acute and chronic leukaemia; lymphoma
Gastrointestinal diseases: chronic inflammatory diseases (Crohn’s disease e Ulcerative Colitis); Irritable bowel syndrome; dyspepsia; gastroesophageal reflux
Infectious diseases: HIV and AIDS; bacterial meningitis; EBV infectious; rubella, mumps, and measles; influenza and influenza-like syndrome; tuberculosis (TBC)
Principles of Gerontology: definition and epidemiology of the aging; biology of the aging; theory of the aging; physiological aging modifications. Principal clinical manifestations of the elderly: fall with/without faintness, delirium, adverse drug reactions, oedematous syndromes, arthropathies, acute vascular events, dyspnea, urinary incontinence
Aim of the course is to systematically discuss most common diseases of Internal Medicine and of medical specialisations, including Geriatry.
In particular, for every disease the following topics will be discussed: definition, epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology, symptoms and signs, diagnosis, prognosis, therapy
