Written exam:detailed report
It is a course tailored to introduce students to the main similarities and differences of the immune systems (innate and acquired) of various animal species.
The course provides a broad overview of the immune system to understand the origins and the numerous strategies that animals adopt as protection against pathogens (i.e. to recognize self from non-self)
- Bauplan
- Immunity and the evolution of defense systems
- Innate and acquired immunity
-The immune system: cellular and humoral responses
-Aging (example of cellular recognition)
- Receptors
-Lectins, cytokines (highly variable molecules)
- Cell death
- The immune system in:
Porifers and Cnidarians (colonial recognition)
-Molluscs
-Anellids
- Polichaets, Oligochaets, Irudineans (transplants, cytokines, wound repair, immunocompetent cells)
-Nematods
-Arthropods
- Crustaceans, Insects
-The host / parasitoid systems
- Echinoderms and Tunicates
-Vertebrates
The didactic material is provided
The course is based both on lessons and on reading of the most recent papers (for the deepening of several themes)
