No prerequisites

The exam will include at least two tests each related to single modules: "Problems related to the management of the territory" and "Phytoremediation and ecosystem services". The final score will be given in thirtieth: in particular, the exam is passed if the score value will be higher than 18/30 for each module.

Course description
The course of Biotechnologies for a sustainable development of territory represents a necessary fulfillment for a student who would like to understand how a biotechnological approach can ensure a social development being respectful of the major ecological principles.
The course is based on theoretical lessons but also on discussion of specific cases where this type of approach has been applied or negletted.

Learning outcomes
• Cognitive skills
- acquisition of fundamental knowledge concerning the most important environmental damages deriving from an unsuitable management of a territory subjected to human or agricultural exploitation.
- acquisition of the phenotype and genotype characteristics which must be present in plant species which must be used for ecosystemic services in urban and extra-urban locations.
• Learning abilities
- ability to read, understand and criticize a scientific text dealing with cellular, anatomical, and physiological properties of plant species being used for biotechnological applications aimed specifically to mitigate the damages due to wrong environment management
- ability to use knowledge accumulated on this scientific area to foresee future developments which could lead to a correct management of a territory
• Practical and subject specific skills
- ability to make whenever is possible a continuous use of modeling in order to analyze problems and to suggest feasible solutions.
- ability to propose an analytical problem-solving approach
• Communication skills
- achievement of a proficient level of reading, writing and speaking in English
- ability to present relevant scientific information by adjusting the communication on the audience characteristics
- ability to be self-confident when meeting other competences operating in the same sector of territory management.

Course syllabus
The corse if organized in two consecutive modules each consisting of 2 CFU
“Problems related to land management”= 2 CFU (16 hours)

“Phytoremediation and ecosystem services” 2 CFU (16 hours)

Final assessment

The examination is organized in two written tests concerning 2 modules of “Problems related to land management” and “Phytoremediation and ecosystem services” The final score is given in 30ies: the examination is successful if a score ≥ 18/30 is gained in each module and in the lab report.
