The aim of the course is to study animal models and their biotechnological potential uses: “laboratory animals” and “farm animals”.

Innovative biotechnology and animal models; Transgenic animals with increased growth rates, enhanced lean muscle mass, enhanced resistance to disease; Transgenic animals that generate large quantities of human proteins in eggs, milk, blood or urine, with the goal of using these products as human pharmaceuticals (including enzymes, clotting factors, albumin and antibodies) (gene farming); Transgenic animals for using animal organs in humans (xenotransplantation); The potential benefits of animal biotechnology including enhanced nutritional content of food for human consumption especially in Africa's poorest countries. Stem cells. Potential risk and benefits in genetic engineering. Care and use regulation of animals genetically engineered for biomedical research purposes. Ethical and social considerations surrounding animal biotechnology.
