Starting from the basic concepts of Optics, the student will acquire knowledge about artificial illumination, from the point of view of the perception, the technology, the design and the applications.

Physics and optics of the light radiation; the vision: the eye and the brain; photobiological and nonvisual effects of the light; the light perception and the visual performances; concepts and definitions regarding light and colour; the light sources, technical, scientific and technological aspects; LED; the illumination apparatus: shapes and optics; photometry and light measurement: the modelling and simulation of the light and its effects.
