Not binding prerequisites: basics of mathematics, physics, organic and inorganic chemistry, biology. English reading comprehension.
The final exam will consist in an oral or written test concerning at least 3 topics of the course program. The final score will be based on comprehension, capacity to apply theoretical concepts to real cases, autonomy of judgement, correct terminology and learning abilities.
The course aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge about the general principles of hygiene and prevention in life and work environments. The course also aims to provide knowledge of the basic concepts of prevention, danger, risk and harm in the context of risk assessment for human health and the environment. The course aims to provide knowledge of the main environmental pollutants; methods of assessment (sampling, analysis and assessment of exposure) of contamination; long, medium and short-term exposures to environmental pollutants. In addition, the student is given a vision as complete as possible on the concepts of safety and prevention, both at regulatory level and as regards the different aspects of risk assessment and protection of human health and the environment.
General concepts of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Concepts of danger, exposure, risk and damage (2 hours)
Chemical Risk (8 hours): classification of risk agents (CLP); risk assessment process; TLV and limit values;
Environmental monitoring: sampling strategies and methods for gas and vapors, aerosols and other environmental monitoring systems; biological monitoring (biological exposure indices, susceptibility).
Physical risks (8 hours): exposure to noise and vibrations, exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiations, microclimate, electromagnetic fields
Risks of biological nature: Main classes of biological agents: Bacteria, Viruses, Mushrooms 2 hours
Other topics (6 hours):
- Air quality of indoor environments (IAQ);
- Atmospheric pollution (particulate matter),
-Legislation for prevention in life and occupational environments;
- Risk management concepts (collective and individual prevention and protection),
- REACH, CLP and GHS regulations
Lesson slides will be provided to the students (e-learning environment).
