HYDRAULICS AND HYDRAULIC PLANTS

Degree course:
Corso di First cycle degree in ENGINEERING FOR WORK AND ENVIRONMENT SAFETY
Academic year when starting the degree:
2016/2017
Year:
2
Academic year in which the course will be held:
2017/2018
Course type:
Compulsory subjects, characteristic of the class
Credits:
9
Period:
First Semester
Standard lectures hours:
72
Detail of lecture’s hours:
Lesson (72 hours)
Requirements:

Preparatory subjects (mandatory): Mathematical Analysis B (SCV 0007) and Physics (SCV 0023).

Final Examination:
Scritto e Orale Congiunti

- Two written exams (concerning the first and second module of the course, respectively); the first of 2-2.5 hours, the second of 1-1.5 hours.
- These two exams are equivalent with regards to the final evaluation
- Written exams do not include theory questions, but consist in computations of simplified schemes (you can consult texts, notes, etc.)
- An oral exam can be optionally required.
- The final rating is in thirtieths.
- Both written exams should be "classified" (score greater than or equal to 12/30); the average of the two scores should be at least 18/30.
- The result of the oral exam could contribute to the final score up to a maximum of 25-30%.

Assessment:
Voto Finale

Cultural area: basics of engineering.

Knowledge and understanding: basic principles of hydraulics and hydraulic structures.

Applying knowledge and understanding: calculate the pressure distribution in fluids at rest; calculate hydrostatic forces on plane surfaces; calculate head loss in pipe flows; analyze basic schemes for liquid conveyance; analyze basic schemes of urban storm drainage.

First module of the course – HYDRAULICS:
- stress concept in continuum mechanics,
- Stevin’s law, pressure measurement,
- hydrostatic force on plane surfaces,
- continuity equation,
- ideal fluid, Bernoulli’s theorem and main applications,
- piezometric head and total head of gradually varied flows,
- friction head loss in pipe flows, Moody’s chart,
- head loss by sudden expansion, Borda’s formula,
- pipe flow computation.

Second module of the course – HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES:
- friction head loss in pipe flows by empirical formulae (e.g., Chezy, Hazen-Williams, etc.),
- pumps and valves,
- flow in pipe network systems, Hardy Cross method,
- flow through porous media, Darcy’s law,
- basics of well hydraulics (e.g., Dupuit–Forchheimer theory),
- rain gauging and basic elaboration of pluviometer data,
- uniform flow in open channels,
- preliminary design of storm drainage system.
