Have interest in religious cultures and good modern and contemporary history knowledge. Following the classes of Comparative Religious law and Turkish Culture is strongly suggested.
For students attending classes: written examination about the topics analyzed during the course and, if due, studied on the indicated texts. The exam will consist in five open questions each of them evaluated with a score from 0 to six. The students will pass with a total of 18 points.
For students not attending classes or for students that will choose this form of examination after having failed a first written exam an oral examination is foreseen.
A knowledge of the basic structures of Islam and Islamic law, in the light of its historical tradition and changes, both in the territories of its origin and in Europe (so called “European Islam”).
Ability to understand the specificity of Islam, a religious tradition which is important for the history, culture and present situation of Europe.
Ability to orient oneself within different cultural codes and to read the religious Islamic law in the light of its theological presuppositions.
Twelve lessons, three hours each, for a total of 36 hours.
In the 2018-2019 a. y. the following topics will be discussed:
- Introduction to Islam: the origins
- The expansion and the Ottoman Empire
- The decline and the European colonization
- The decolonization and the “laic regimes”
- The “Arab Springs”
- The European Islam: the France and UK “models”
- The “second generations”: hopes and fears
- Islam in Italy
- Focus on Islamic Banking and Finance
A Winter School with Arab and Jewish students from Israel will be proposed for February 2019.
The Winter School, sponsored by the Rotary Club of the Region Lombardia will involve a residential week in Como and a week in Nazareth. Participation in the Winter School - admitted after selection (the number of attending students will go from 10 to 20) - will result in a different exam program.

Due to the number of students, classes will be held through lectures giving the overall framework on the different subjects with the help of audio-videos, Power Points presentations and others materials, all regularly uploaded within the e-learning page of the course.
