Fundamentals in Nuclear and Particle Physics

Discussion of a specific topic in a seminar – oral verification of the knowledge of the fundamental.

Referrring to the “Dublin Descriptors”, the main objectives of the course may be outlined as follows:
• Knowledge and understanding: comprehend and master instruments & methods related to elementary particle physics at accelerator facilities. Get a full understanding of the boundary conditions in experiment design by the pre-existing knowledge and the impact of the foreground knowledge resulting by the experiment execution.
• Applying knowledge and understanding: capability to analyze an compare the different potential solutions fitting the physics driven requests on an experimental apparatus for High Energy Physics
• Communication skills: learn to present in a clear, critical and brief way the results of a review or original analysis
• Learning skills: master the basic of bibliography search, critical reading and comparative analysis

Every year, specific topics will be addressed. The choice of the topics will also depend on the interest of the attendees. As exempalry illustration, the scheme related to Physics at the CERN Large Electron Positron Collider is reported:
• Electroweak Physics in the pre-LEP era
• The LEP machine and the 4 experiments (DELPHI, ALEPH, OPAL and L3)
• A comparative analysis of the experimenatl technologies in view of the precision on the main results
• Exemplary illustration of relevant outcome:
1. Phsyics with simple topologies
2. Electroweak Physics: main results
3. Heavy Flavour Physics
4. The quest for the Higgs Particle

A series of papers published in scientific journals.

Lectures and seminars by experts and by the students themselves, on specific topics.
