Basic knowledge of chemistry and biology.
The exam is intended to assess the capability aquired by the student in terms of:
1. knowledge and understanding of the theoretical basis of the biotechnological processes applicable to the removal of contaminants;
2. interpretation of the decontamination processes under different operative conditions.
The exam consists in a written test, during which the student will be asked to demonstrate the skills reported in the above-mentioned list, and an oral test.
The results of the exams will be expressed on a basis of 30 points: the minimum mark to pass the exam is 18 out of 30.
The course of "Biotechnological processes for the environment" is provided during the third year and is based on the description of biological and biotechnological processes that can be applied to the sector of environmental depollution. The course is oriented to the description of processes for the removal of contaminants from different environmental matrices through biotechnological applications.
The course is especially focused on the treatment of wastewater (biological oxidation, nitrification, denitrification, dephosphorization, etc.), of solid waste (composting, anaerobic and aerobic digestion, thermal treatment, etc.) and of air (biofiltration, bio-trickling filtration, etc.).
• removal of contaminants from wastewater
-pollution prevention and remediation in surface water basins
-characteristics of wastewater and general principles of wastewater treatments
-pretreatments
-general principles of biological processes applied to the removal of pollutants from wastewater
