Requirements: 

Entry level is no less than A2 of the CEFR. Lessons will be held mainly in English.
At the beginning of the module all students will undergo a level test so that two classes will be formed (Intermediate and Beginners) and, where necessary, supplementary individual self-study activities will be identified. Non-attending students are invited to take the level test in order to ascertain the best reference texts and study path for them.

Final Examination: 
Orale

The exam for Tourism Sciences students is composed of a written and an oral test to assess the abilities acquired during the course. The exam for Law students consists of the written test only.
Students owning an international certification of CEFR B1-level knowledge of English won't have to take the level test nor the exam. Certificates will be accepted only if issued in the previous 3 years by a recognised institution included in the MIUR list (see 'Manifesto degli studi').

WRITTEN TEST

Maximum time given: 75 minutes. Dictionaries are not allowed.

ORAL TEST - ONLY FOR TOURISM SCIENCES STUDENTS

Students need to pass the written test to be admitted to the oral test.
The oral test for Intermediate, Beginners and non-attending students consists of giving a presentation in English concerning a particular aspect of a destination from an English-speaking country (such as the UK, Ireland, the United States, Canada) or a country where tourism marketing is usually carried out in English (e.g. Dubai) seen as a tourism destination. The objective is to give an elevator pitch to the Module Convenor as if he/she were a prospective traveller. Materials, websites, locations and aspects will be suggested by the Module Convenor in the lessons and on the module page of the University e-learning platform.

The module aims at achieving a B1 knowledge of English based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR); to this avail the knowledge of basic grammar and syntax structures will be strengthened and improved, while building up vocabulary and phrases to be used in general and professional contexts. At the end of the course the student is expected to:
LISTENING COMPREHENSION - can understand the main points of clear standard speech (conversations, lectures, lessons, audios and videos) on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
READING COMPREHENSION - can understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language.
SPEAKING - can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken; a Tourism Sciences student is also expected to be able to present clearly a theme trip to an English-speaking tourist destination, arguing their choice.
WRITING - can produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or job-related.

Lessons will focus on materials chosen from the module texts (see below; a list of the sections covered will be published on the module page of the e-learning platform) and the relevant CEFR B1-level vocabulary, syntax, grammar, phrases and idioms. Special attention will be paid to developing listening and reading comprehension along with professional writing (neutral and formal emails). Module contents may vary according to the language knowledge and learning abilities of the classes.

N.B.: Lifestyle Intermediate, Coursebook can and should be bought by all students before the beginning of the course and the level test, as it will be used with both classes since the very first lesson.

Non-attending students

Reference texts for non-attending students are the same as above, according to the level ascertained for each student through the level test.

Lecture-style lessons, partly involving student direct contribution at individual or small group levels (practice, simulations, project work) in order to improve and test learning, vocabulary proficient use and spoken communication. In order for the students to be better acquainted with the diversity of English the module texts will be complemented by online/digital authentic materials.
Beginners / non-attending students will have to focus more thoroughly on grammar topics with the support of the suggested grammar reference book (see below) and online/digital contents thereof.
