The final examination is written and consists of 2 parts: the first one is aimed at assessing the student's knowledge of the basic English grammar rules through 48 questions, including gap-filling exercises, sentence transformation, error correction, use of the right tense.
The second part tests the correct use of the vocabulary through 2 exercises: to complete a dialogue between a doctor/nurse and a patient, to choose the correct alternative in a passage.
The course is aimed at reinforcing students’ communication skills at work and giving them practice in current healthcare situations. The focus on medical vocabulary will also help them read scientific journals and textbooks more fluently in order to keep up-to-date with the latest advances in medicine.
Grammar: the article- countable and uncountable nouns- personal pronouns- indefinite adjectives and pronouns- adjectives and adverbs(comparatives and superlatives)- the Simple Present- the Present Continuous- the Simple Past- the Past Continuous- the Present Perfect (simple and continuous)- the Past Perfect- the Future(be going to, will/shall, present cont., simple present)- the passive voice- modal verbs- relative clauses (defining/non-defining).
Vocabulary: the perfusionist’s job- the hospital and daily routines on the ward- getting a patient’s information (completing hospital admission forms, understanding a patient’s complaint, medical history), describing parts of the body, terminology for medical procedures and medical investigation (ultrasound scan, CT scan, MRI, ECG, laboratory tests), taking care of pre-and post-operative patients (using equipment to take patient Observations, pain management, medications, rehabilitation).
